Magnetic Field Decay in Isolated Neutron Stars
We investigate three mechanisms that promote the loss of magnetic flux from an isolated neutron star. Ohmic decay produces a diffusion of the magnetic field with respect to the charged particles. It proceeds at a rate that is inversely proportional to the electric conductivity and independent of the magnetic field strength. Ohmic decay occurs in both the fluid core and solid crust of a neutron ...
متن کاملOptical Identification of Binary Pulsars: Implications for Magnetic Field Decay in Neutron Stars1
We report the discovery of the optical counterparts of two binary pulsar systems-0655+64 and 0820+02. In accordance with stellar evolution scenarios we find the optical counterparts to be white dwarfs. The existence of a cool and therefore old white dwarf in the 0655 + 64 system contradicts the standard hypothesis of exponential decay of magnetic fields in neutron stars. We resolve this contrad...
متن کاملNon-Relativistic Limit of Neutron Beta-Decay Cross-Section in the Presence of Strong Magnetic Field
One of the most important reactions of the URCA that lead to the cooling of a neutron star, is neutron beta-decay ( ). In this research, the energy spectra and wave functions of massive fermions taking into account the Anomalous Magnetic Moment (AMM) in the presence of a strong changed magnetic field are calculated. For this purpose, the Dirac-Pauli equation for charged and neutral fermions is ...
متن کاملMagnetic fields of neutron stars in X-ray pulsars
Estimates of the magnetic field of neutron stars in X-ray pulsars are obtained using the hypothesis of the equilibrium period for disk and wind accretion and also from the BATSE data on timing of X-ray pulsars using the observed maximum spin-down rate. Cyclotron lines at energies ≥ 100 keV in several Be-transient are predicted for future observations.
متن کاملSlowly rotating pulsars and magnetic field decay
Twodozen long period pulsars are separated from the swarm of ordinary pulsars by an obvious gap in the P versus Sd diagram (where Sd = log Ṗ + 21.0), with a plausible upper boundary for ordinary pulsars. Possible pulsar evolutionary tracks are discussed to explain the diagram in terms of previously suggested scenarios of magnetic field decay. The (P–Sd) diagram is difficult to understand if the...
